Loved my session with the team at Fnatic …I think my kids feel like I’m slighter more cool than I was before as a result (the starting point was admittedly low…) Very exciting business with lots of ambition, talent and creativity, and keen to learn about how to create high performance team environments! Thanks Brad Richards for the invite, and Nicola , Martin , Michael , Maryia V. Couple of key talking points that we discussed that I particularly enjoyed: - how do you improve standards across a business, increase accountability whilst maintaining high levels of psychological safety - what does high performance teaming mean for different groups/functions/roles across a business? - what are the pillars of high performance and what tactically can you do to improve them? Loved it!
Apr 2026Two Worlds in One Day This morning, I was at the AWS Life Sciences Conference in New York. There were well over a thousand people in attendance, many of the leading practitioners applying AI in life sciences today. The conversations were about acceleration. AI models compressing years of drug discovery into months. Predictive systems improving safety, reducing failure rates, and potentially saving millions of lives. There was a sense of cautious optimism in the room. A recognition that human capability is being fundamentally expanded, along with the adjustments practitioners will have to make. Later that evening, I found myself in a very different world. I had dinner at a restaurant by Daniel Boulud, one of the world’s most celebrated restaurateurs, with restaurants across the globe. What struck me was not just the food, but the man himself. At 71, he was moving from table to table, engaging with guests, paying attention to details that most people would never notice. I had the opportunity to speak with him, congratulate him, but also understand what continues to drive him after all these years. We spoke about where it all began. Like many great builders, he came from very humble beginnings. No easy path. Just craft, discipline, and a deep love for what he does. I shared a bit of my own journey as well, building from very little, step by step, over decades. We also spoke about cooking, something I personally enjoy doing. For me, it connects back to memories of my mother and grandmother. For him, it is Lyon, returning to where it all began.. At one point, we touched on AI. It may transform many industries, but the restaurant, at its highest form, is something else entirely. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. It was the difference in what is being created. In life sciences, the goal is clear: • Better outcomes • Faster timelines • Greater precision AI fits naturally here. It enhances what we are trying to achieve. In a great restaurant, the goal is very different: • Memory • Story • Human connection The food matters, of course. But it is not the whole story. The experience is the product. And that experience is deeply, irreducibly human. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆. It is about meaning. Food, at its highest level, sits in that category. It carries memory across generations. It connects us to people who are no longer here. It brings us into a moment with others, fully present. You cannot optimize that without changing what it is. AI will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, especially in areas like healthcare, where the upside is undeniable. At the same time, it will force us to become more intentional about what we protect. Because as more of the world becomes efficient, predictable, and automated, the value of what is human, imperfect, and experiential will only increase.
Apr 2026💳 Crypto cards look simple. The compliance stack underneath them is anything but. Jonathan Low's breakdown of how crypto payment cards work is worth a read - but I want to add the layer that rarely gets discussed: what's actually happening in the back office every time a cardholder taps to pay. The conversion event is the compliance event. The moment crypto converts to fiat to settle a transaction, the VASP has executed an exchange. That triggers KYC/CDD obligations, transaction monitoring thresholds and in FATF Travel Rule jurisdictions - including the UAE under VARA at the AED 3,500 threshold - mandatory data transmission to the beneficiary institution. The user experiences a tap-and-pay. The compliance team is processing something considerably more complex. Real-time settlement and real-time monitoring don't move at the same speed. Card networks expect near-instant authorisation. AML screening logic isn't always architected to match that latency. Firms that build products without solving for this aren't just creating operational friction - they're embedding regulatory risk directly into the product architecture. The GCC is the most interesting jurisdiction to watch right now. VARA's Compliance and Risk Management Rulebook, the CMA-VARA mutual recognition framework agreed in August 2025 and DFSA's updated crypto token guidance have collectively created one of the clearest regulatory environments for licensed VASPs operating in this space. Regulatory clarity is commercial infrastructure - and the UAE is ahead of most markets in delivering it. The unhosted wallet problem adds another dimension entirely. When a card top-up originates from a self-custody wallet, Travel Rule data is structurally unavailable. How issuers handle that gap - technically and regulatorily - is an open question that the industry hasn't fully resolved. This intersection of payment flows, real-time settlement and AML monitoring is precisely what we built Raqeeb to address at Haydr - transaction monitoring logic that has to work at card-settlement speed without compromising on risk coverage. If you're a VASP, payments firm, or card issuer navigating this in the UAE or GCC, I'd be glad to connect. #CryptoCompliance #VirtualAssets #AML #RegTech #CryptoCards #VARA #FATF #TravelRule #PaymentsCompliance #DIFC #UAE #GCC #FinancialCrime #VASP #Haydr
Apr 2026🔍 APM & Observability – Key to Modern Applications In today’s systems, performance and availability are critical. APM (Application Performance Management) combined with observability provides deep insights into how applications behave. 💡 Key capabilities: • End-to-end transaction tracing • Identification of slow APIs and bottlenecks • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) • Insights from logs, metrics, and traces • Faster troubleshooting and issue resolution ⚙️ Common tools: • Dynatrace • New Relic • AppDynamics • Azure Application Insights 📌 Observability helps answer: What is happening? (Metrics) Why is it happening? (Logs) Where is it happening? (Traces) 👉 APM + Observability enable teams to build reliable, scalable, and high-performing applications. #APM #Observability #DevOps #SRE #Cloud #Performance #Microservices
