Today is NF Awareness Day, and even though I’m no longer in the lab full-time, I still use my (limited) free time to advocate for those affected by NF1. Last week, I attended the inaugural RI Steps2Cure NF Walk hosted by Neurofibromatosis Northeast , where I had the opportunity to discuss NF research happening across New England. Next month, I’ll be attending both a workshop and the annual NF Conference hosted by the Children's Tumor Foundation in Denver. And while my role may look different now, I’ll continue contributing to NF research and advocacy in whatever ways I can. I think part of the reason I’ve always wanted to stay connected to NF is because working in rare disease research is not like a typical job. When you move on to another position, patients and families don’t suddenly wake up without the disease—otherwise everyone would be quitting! The day-to-day responsibilities may change, but the impact of the disease remains. I also hope that at least some of my students this past semester walked away with a greater interest in NF, rare disease, and biomedical research. Ultimately, helping more people care about NF is what NF Awareness Day is all about.

May 2026Your architecture is not failing due to poor code; it's failing because you're addressing problems that don't exist. I've observed teams create systems designed for millions of users when they only have a few hundred. Consider the complexities: Kafka streams, multi-region setups, intricate pipelines. But for what purpose? Meanwhile, something as straightforward as a password reset can take weeks to deliver. That's the real issue. Overengineering does not strengthen your system; it slows it down, complicates changes, and delays shipping. I've experienced this firsthand. When you focus on scale too early, you add unnecessary layers "just in case," and your system becomes cumbersome. Developers end up spending more time managing the system than enhancing it. Today, I adhere to a simple rule: build for today, while leaving room for tomorrow. True scalability arises from simplicity, not complexity. If you can't explain your architecture to a junior developer in a few minutes, it’s likely doing too much. Curious, have you ever overbuilt something that didn’t need it? #SoftwareArchitecture #TechLeadership #FullStack #Engineering
