Rishabh's summer vacation began today. Together — with some help from his new digital friend, Mr. #Perplexity — we drew up the plan. Swimming every morning. Pizza once a week. Ice cream twice a week (with some flexibility). Evenings for skating, cycling, badminton, cricket. Whatever fancies his mood that day. "Is it going to be very hot during the day, Dadu?" "Hmmm. It will be, sadly." "We'll watch cartoons in the day then. What did you do during the day in your summer vacation, Dadu?" "I played football. Almost daily. The matches in the afternoon were the best part of the vacation." "It must not have been so hot those days." Silence. Some questions do not call for replies. Extreme heat, now forecast across large parts of India this summer, is no longer an inconvenience our children can play through. It is a condition they will have to learn to live within — and it shapes not just their bodies but their moods, their friendships, the rhythms of childhood itself. We owe our children honest conversations about this. About what heat does to the body, yes, but also to attention, sleep, irritability, the small social worlds that summer afternoons used to build.
