We can't have a nuclear renaissance if we don't close the nuclear fuel cycle." Those are not my words. They are Assistant Secretary @Tim Walsh's, speaking this week at the Savannah River Site. A nuclear renaissance built on a once-through fuel cycle is not a renaissance. It is a deferral. We mine, we enrich, we burn one percent of the energy in the fuel, and we leave the rest as a liability for the next generation to manage. The alternative already exists. Lead-cooled fast reactors can close the fuel cycle and burn the spent nuclear fuel that today is treated as waste, and shrink the radiological footprint to a few hundred years rather than hundreds of thousands. This is the mission newcleo was built for. It is encouraging to see the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the DOE Office of Environmental Management moving in the same direction. #Nuclear #ClosedFuelCycle #AdvancedReactors #SMR #AMR
May 2026Today I had the honor of opening PHYSOR 2026 in #Turin . I was pleased to be joined by Professor Sandra Dulla of the Politecnico di Torino and by Maurizio Marrone, Vice President of the Regione Piemonte . Established by the American Nuclear Society (ANS), PHYSOR is the world’s leading conference in #nuclear #reactor #physics . This year marks a significant milestone because for the first time, the event is being held in Italy and is jointly organised by newcleo and Politecnico di Torino . The opening session of today concluded with a panel featuring Nick Bachmann (Director of Nuclear Fuel Product Management, Westinghouse Electric Company , USA), Dionysios Chionis (Head of Nuclear Physics, Axpo Power AG , Switzerland), Jess Gehin (Nuclear Science and Technology Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory , USA), Giovanni Sale (Energy Transition Strategy SVP of NEXTCHEM and President and CEO of Next-N), Stefano SALVATORES (Technical Authority Director, EDF / Programs & Strategy Division, France), and W. A. "Art" Wharton III (President, Studsvik Scandpower , USA). It is especially encouraging to see so many young people alongside leading scientists, engineers, and industry experts from across the global nuclear community, come together to discuss and shape the next-generation reactors, from core physics and design to innovative fuel cycles. A strong start to five days of discussion, innovation, and collaboration. Thanks to all the speakers, sponsors, partners, organisers, and everyone who submitted their papers for this breaking-record edition. Wishing you all a productive and successful week ahead.
