I won the argument, but lost the client. Two years ago, I filmed a highlights reel for a family event. The client asked if I could take some photos on the day as well. I said yes. I was very much focused on the video and all the photos were secondary. So I took some photos, not that many - but some, and delivered them alongside the highlight reel. The client wasn't happy. They felt there weren't enough photos. I held my ground. I told them I never agreed to a specific number. I said I delivered exactly what I promised. And technically, I was right. But I lost the client anyway. And every referral that could have come from them. All because I never took the time to define what "some" actually meant before the job started. That was two years ago. Now before every single job, everything goes on the table… deliverables, quantities, timelines, expectations. All of it is agreed upfront. I still make mistakes, but I try my best to not make that one anymore. Clarity protects you, even when working with people you ‘trust’. Vagueness will always cost you more than you think. Has a lack of clarity ever cost you a relationship - professional or even personal?
