Apr 2026“Procurement support is just backend work.” That’s what I believed too—until I stepped into a newly formed Cost Control & Procurement Support function 2.5 years ago. No legacy systems. No defined processes. No playbook. Just a blank slate—and a label: “support”. In the early days, the role was exactly that. POs were processed 📄 WOs were issued 🧾 Codes were created 🏷️ Speed mattered. Thinking didn’t. And then the cracks started showing… ⚠️ Scope mismatches ⚠️ Cost overruns ⚠️ Vendor disputes And when you traced it back—it didn’t start on site. It started at the moment the order was released to the vendors. That realization changed everything. Because alongside the day-to-day, we were also: 🤖 Building AI-led automations to reduce manual gaps 📊 Responding to internal & statutory audit queries—where every detail is questioned That forces a different mindset. You don’t just “create” an order anymore. You ask: 👉 Will this stand scrutiny months later? 👉 Is every assumption traceable? 👉 Are we setting the project up for clarity—or confusion? We made a conscious shift. From processing orders… ➡️ to reviewing intent From executing requests… ➡️ to strengthening processes It wasn’t comfortable. We pushed back on incomplete inputs ⚡ We slowed things down when needed ⏳ We asked better questions—even when it wasn’t welcomed But over time, something changed. My team stopped being seen as “order creators” …and started being valued as process reviewers & execution partners 💡 The impact? ✔️ Fewer surprises ✔️ Better cost visibility ✔️ Stronger accountability That’s when it became clear— Procurement support is not a support function. It’s where: 💰 Cost control actually starts 🛑 Risks are intercepted early 🏗️ Project outcomes are quietly shaped Call it support if you want. But in reality—it’s one of the most underutilized strategic weapons in any project. #Procurement #CostControl #RealEstate #ProjectManagement #ValueEngineering #Leadership #ProcessExcellence #RiskManagement #AIAutomation #StrategicThinking #WorkplaceInsights
