Surprised that the latest IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) Bellwether survey shows marketing spend is up? I'm not. On the surface it is counterintuitive that budgets are up given we have a deeply unhelpful and anti-business resident in Number 11. That, combined with a world stage that keeps serving up woes, is enough to make you want to mothball your budget, curl up in a corner and wait for better times. But, as we always see in the challenging times, it forces discipline and discernment in the boardroom. You have to outperform the market wherever it is in the economic cycle. What I'm seeing from the brands I'm speaking to as part of my role at OLIVER | The Brandtech Group : - A focus on shifting spend from non-working (agency fees, headcount and the like) into working spend (essentially media spend) - The freeing up of time + resource + budget through proper structural re-engineering of marketing departments / agencies across People, Process and Technology - The use of AI and Agentic Workflows as part of the a wider re-engineering of People, Process and Tech to drive both efficiency and, crucially, better outcomes So, whilst counterintuitive on the surface, the survey findings are actually not unexpected as business has been forced to be very discerning in the decisions they make. https://lnkd.in/eT3rBsuY

Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining the OLIVER EMEA Black History Month Panel Discussion, themed around the powerful Zulu concept: “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” - “I am a person because of other people” or “I am because you are.” The conversation explored what it truly means to see the humanity in others, to grow through community, to take ownership of your life, and to support others as they find their own purpose and path. Some quotes from the team that really stayed with me: 1. “We are the ancestors of others’ dreams.” Sibo Ngcobo 2. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, you have to go together.” Paul van den Berg 3. “Representation is one of the most powerful things in a person’s life. Just seeing someone from a similar background at the finish line where you want to be.” Sphelele Gumede 4. “In telling your own story, you unlock possibilities for people you may never even meet.” Sphelele Gumede It was an inspiring reminder that our individual stories and actions ripple outward, shaping others, shaping communities, and shaping the future. Thank you to Amelia Greene for organising such a great conversation! #OLIVERAgency #BlackHistoryMonth #Diversity #Inclusion #OLIVERSouthAfrica #OLIVERFrance #OLIVERNetherlands #OLIVERSweden #OLIVERSpain #OLIVERTurkiye #OLIVERUAE #OLIVERGermany
