The most interesting energy technology I’ve evaluated wasn’t new - it was something we abandoned. In climate discussions, innovation is often framed as a quest for breakthroughs. In practice, progress comes from re-examining what already exists. Over the years, I’ve led the evaluation of multiple technological solutions within a broader strategy for energy stability. One of the most compelling examples today is #EGS (Enhanced Geothermal Systems). About 25 years ago, #Ormat was already exploring the EGS concept - an engineered underground system that generates energy from the heat of the rock, not just natural reservoirs. The engineering worked. The economics didn’t. The technology was set aside. Today, the context has changed. Advances in oil and gas drilling have made what was once too expensive, increasingly viable. For the first time, geothermal is not limited to where nature “did the work.” EGS opens the possibility of stable, 24/7, low-emission energy almost anywhere. The technology is not there yet, it’s still between pilot and scale, but the potential is huge and real. This is the real shift. Too often, ideas are dismissed because they failed once. In reality, what failed was timing, cost structure, or the surrounding ecosystem. Don’t let yesterday’s constraints define today’s decisions. When I look at startups and new ideas, I don’t rush to dismiss what didn’t work in the past. Not because the technology changed, but because the world did. As we mark #Earth_Day , let’s embrace a new mindset: the true breakthrough isn’t just in the drill bit, it’s in our ability to see the promise in the past and the courage to bring it to life today.
