May 2026Two Deals. One Week. Canada's LNG Future Just Got a Lot More Real. Over the last 2 weeks, global capital made two very large bets on the same basin. Shell agreed to acquire ARC Resources in a transaction valued at C$22 billion — a 27% premium to market, the company's biggest deal in more than a decade. And Apollo Global Management agreed to acquire a 40% stake in Pembina Gas Infrastructure from KKR — one of Canada's largest gas processing platforms, with 5 billion cubic feet per day of capacity sitting directly upstream of west coast LNG export infrastructure. One deal owns the molecules. The other owns the pipes that move them. That's not the whole story. Between those two transactions: → The federal government approved Enbridge's C$4B Sunrise Expansion on T-South — the pipeline that feeds Woodfibre LNG (BP holds 100% offtake on Phase 1). Woodfibre Phase 2 just got a pipeline. → Shell's CEO told analysts that LNG Canada Phase 2 FID is expected by end of 2026 → Reuters reported Apollo, Blackstone and KKR are all bidding for Shell's LNG Canada stake at USD10-15B And the facility itself? LNG Canada Phase 1 started exports in July 2025. By April 2026 it's running at a ~12.2 MTPA annualised rate against 14 MTPA nameplate. South Korea 47%, Japan 24%, China 15%. In under 10 months. The conversation about Canadian LNG has always centred on terminals, timelines, and politics. But LNG is only as credible as its feedgas supply chain. Shell CEO Wael Sawan: "Not all LNG is born equal. Canadian LNG is advantaged by the feedstock, by the AECO index which we see will continue to be at a discount to Henry Hub for a long period of time. The war in Iran is also incentivizing Asian customers to diversify supply — and they are willing to pay a premium for that." He's not wrong. And he just put C$22 billion behind the statement. BMO analyst Jeremy McCrea said of the Shell/ARC deal: "This is probably the start of more things to come." When a supermajor and trillion-dollar asset managers all move on the same basin in the same week, that is not coincidence. That is a signal — and it's coming from the one source that actually counts. Patient, long-duration, return-seeking capital. Shell says condensate-first, LNG upside. But the feedgas is now in-house and Phase 2 FID is expected by year-end. Is Canada's LNG window finally closing or just opening?
