Apr 2026Hello All, Recently, during a firewall deployment on AWS, my team and I encountered a challenging issue while testing east–west traffic between Server 1 in VPC A and Server 2 in VPC B. Despite having the expected routing and security configurations in place, traffic was not flowing as intended. Traditional troubleshooting involved manually checking the following: -->Route tables -->Security Groups -->Network ACLs This is where AWS VPC Reachability Analyzer proved to be a game-changer. The Use Case We tried using VPC Reachability Analyzer to analyze the network path between the source EC2 instance in VPC A and the destination EC2 instance in VPC B. Within minutes, the service provided a clear, hop-by-hop view of: -->The complete network path -->Where the traffic was being allowed or blocked -->The exact configuration causing the failure Benefits of AWS VPC Reachability Analyzer -->Faster Troubleshooting: Identifies the precise point of failure in complex VPC architectures -->Proactive Validation: Verify connectivity before deploying changes -->Time & Cost Efficient: Reduces manual analysis and downtime -->Security-Aware: Evaluates routes, security groups, NACLs, gateways, and firewalls together -->Great for Hybrid & Multi-VPC Setups: Ideal for east–west traffic, transit gateways, and shared services models The issue was later resolved. We identified that the gateway IP assigned as the first IP of the instance subnet had not been configured on the firewall instance through a static route. Once the correct static route was added, the issue was resolved. Key Takeaway In environments with multiple VPCs and firewalls, visibility is critical.
