“We are making structural changes to move faster, sharpen focus, and ensure we are set up to deliver on our most important priorities,” [INSERT COMPANY*] said in the message. This statement is convincing to no one, so communications teams should stop using it. Every company says this, every time they do layoffs. Which begs the question why you didn't move faster with a sharpened focus after the last time you did layoffs. And the time before that. The reality is, layoffs very rarely accomplish either of those things. Every layoff is followed by a wave of attrition as people head for the exits, projects are delayed or abandoned, morale sinks, and months of musical chairs begins for those left behind. Layoffs are a business reality and occasional necessity. But we should stop pretending that they are anything but cost management. *This is an actual company statement issued today.

I cannot believe that my feed is not absolutely jammed with takes on a tiny shoe company just changing its mind and deciding to be an AI company instead.
