Dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 11 on an ASUS NUC fails by default by virtue of the Intel VMD, changing the communication process from a direct connection betweem the CPU and NVMe SSD via the PCIe bus to a Intel VMD middleman being inserted between the CPU and NVMe. Ubuntu doesn't have a driver to understand this extra abstraction layer, and as such, can't find anywhere to properly install the bootloader. But GRUB (the Ubuntu bootloader) has to install SOMEWHERE, there isn't functionality to completely stop the write if the NVMe can't be found. So, where did it write? Likely culprits are an incorrect write to an ESP, or, writing to...well...goodness knows where. The ether? The void? My bank account? When this happened, my computer...well...it blew up. The BIOS completely stopped working and I couldn't get nothin to boot from nowhere. I had to open the machine and reset the CMOS. Talk about shaky hands... Turns out that I can disable the VMD and try a dual boot again to get Linux running on this NUC. Which is what I plan on spending the rest of the evening doing. This pursuit got me thinking - has anyone ever hacked the Intel VMD? It seems unhelpful in my humble computer's architecture, as it was originally meant for enterprise-grade server use. Enlighten me. And wish me luck.
