Navigating the complexity of healthcare can feel daunting, yet identifying the root causes behind soaring healthcare costs is quite clear-cut. Yale economist Zack Cooper, in a recent New York Times op-ed, highlighted a striking trend: since 2000, hospital prices have outpaced inflation by a factor of three and have risen twice as fast as prescription drug costs. One of the main contributors to this escalation is the wave of consolidation that has swept through the hospital industry. Over the past two decades, more than 1,300 hospital mergers have taken place, leading to the emergence of powerful health systems with the leverage to demand significantly higher reimbursements. As a result, the financial strain is ultimately shifted onto employers and consumers, who find their resources increasingly stretched — affecting both their businesses and their families. These economics are unsustainable. At Premera Blue Cross , affordability is central to our purpose of making healthcare work better. This shapes everything we do, including actively engaging with our health system partners to establish fair, reasonable and appropriate reimbursement. On that, our commitment to our customers and members is unwavering. There is hope for a better healthcare future, and Zack Cooper’s insights make it clear where our efforts should be directed as we strive for meaningful change. https://lnkd.in/gHrst9Dc
