May 2026AVoIP is everywhere now. But here’s the question most designs still miss: 👉 Does your switch support Transparent Clock? The uncomfortable reality Some AVoIP systems need network jitter within ±30 microseconds to perform properly. Let that sink in. ±30 µs. Yet in real-world networks, it’s easy to introduce: * Tens to hundreds of microseconds of jitter * Just from packets crossing multiple switches The hidden problem PTP is supposed to keep everything in sync. But most switches: * Forward PTP packets blindly * Don’t account for internal delay * Quietly introduce timing variation at every hop Scale that across a network… and you’re already outside your jitter budget. Transparent Clock changes the game With Transparent Clock (TC), switches: * Measure packet residence time * Correct the PTP timestamp in real time * Prevent jitter from accumulating Result: PTP stays accurate — even at scale. Why this matters Without TC: * Jitter stacks up * ±30 µs gets blown quickly * Systems become unstable, unpredictable, hard to troubleshoot With TC: * Timing stays tight * Synchronization holds * Deployments scale with confidence Not all “PTP support” is equal This is where a lot of networks fall short. “PTP-aware” is often treated as a checkbox. But PTP accuracy is what actually matters. What we’ve done at NETGEAR We’ve made this a baseline — not an afterthought: * All M4250 and M4350 switches support Transparent Clock * 8 models of M4350 also support Boundary Clock for even stronger timing architectures Because in AVoIP, timing isn’t a feature. It’s the foundation. Bottom line You can get everything else right: * Bandwidth ✅ * QoS ✅ * Multicast ✅ …and still fail because your network destroys timing. Don’t just ask if your network supports PTP. Ask how well it preserves time. How often do you see Transparent Clock actually specified in AVoIP designs? #ptp #tc #netgear

May 2026AV-over-IP has transformed how we design and scale audio-visual systems—but it’s also introduced a new class of challenges that many teams underestimate. Here are 5 problems I see most often in AV networks: 1️⃣ Bandwidth & congestion High-resolution video streams can quickly overwhelm networks that weren’t designed for real-time media. Without proper QoS, performance suffers. 2️⃣ Latency & sync issues When audio and video drift out of sync—even slightly—it’s immediately noticeable. Distributed systems make this even harder to manage, especially without proper PTP (Precision Time Protocol) synchronization. 3️⃣ Interoperability gaps Multiple protocols, vendors, and standards mean integration isn’t always seamless. “Plug and play” is still more myth than reality. 4️⃣ Configuration complexity AV now depends heavily on IT concepts like VLANs, multicast, and PTP. Misconfigurations can take down entire deployments. 5️⃣ Scalability & management As deployments grow, visibility and control become major challenges. Monitoring, troubleshooting, and managing hundreds of endpoints isn’t trivial without the right tools and architecture. 👉 The big shift? AV is no longer just AV—it’s IT. Teams that bridge that gap (skills, processes, and ownership) are the ones building reliable, scalable systems. Curious—what’s been the biggest challenge in your AV deployments?
