🔐 Did you know you use access control every day? Unlocking your phone with Face ID. Logging into your work laptop. Being able to view something in a system but not edit it. All of that is access control. In simple terms, access control is how systems decide who can do what, and what actions are allowed. In my cybersecurity journey , I’ve been learning how this everyday concept is actually one of the most important IT controls behind security, risk, and audit. People often explain access control using AAA • Authentication – Who are you? • Authorization – What can you do? • Accounting – What did you do? (logs and monitoring) Why does this matter? Think about what happens if former employees still have access, or if everyone has admin permissions. That’s not just a technical issue. It turns into a real business and compliance risk. Some best practices we’ve been learning • Least privilege • Zero Trust thinking • Regular access and role reviews • Proper deprovisioning when roles change • Balancing security with usability And in practice, access control usually looks like: • RBAC – access based on role (Admin, HR, Student) • ABAC – access based on context like device, location, or time • JIT – giving access only when it’s needed • MAC – strict centralized policies (common in government environments) The more I learn, the more I realize that access control isn’t just about locking things down. When implemented properly, they help organizations operate safely and efficiently. #Cybersecurity #ITControls #AccessControl #GRC #ITAudit #CISSP
May 2026A well-deserved welcome to Rosemary, and a great moment for the RSM Forensic team. I've had the privilege of working with her already, and the thing Jarrod captures perfectly is her ability to bring clarity to situations where most people would drown in complexity. Regulatory insight, investigations depth, and the kind of credibility that only comes from time at the SFO and FCA. The practice is in a strong place, and this makes it stronger. Welcome, Rosemary!
