𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐍𝐨𝐰’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 FedNow is starting to be part of more conversations around cross-border payments. The Federal Reserve is now thinking about cross-border payments using intermediaries. That one move could influence how banks think about real-time cross-border payments. Today, about 1,700 banks are already using FedNow. The system works in seconds, all day, every day. Now it is slowly opening beyond the US. One thing stands out to me. Speed alone is no longer the main challenge. Managing revenue around it is. When payments move across countries in real time, new problems show up. Settlement timing gets tricky. Liquidity also needs to be pre-funded or managed in real time across markets. Fees are not consistent. FX margins and intermediary charges also become harder to track. Billing cycles stop matching. Reconciliation becomes harder to manage as volumes grow. One payment can pass through multiple systems, and matching records across them becomes harder. Risk and compliance checks also get harder across countries, even if the payment itself is instant. Adding an intermediary connects more networks, but it also brings extra steps, added fees, and more coordination to manage. I have seen banks miss this. Payments can go live quickly, but small revenue gaps may start showing up through pricing gaps, FX spreads, intermediary fees, exceptions, and delayed settlement tracking. This is where RIA Advisory helps banks by helping them transform their pricing, billing, and reconciliation processes for transparency & better control. I keep thinking about one question.
