“Take care to get what you like or you will be forced to like what you get.” - George Bernard Shaw So many professionals I work with are stuck in “survival mode”. Not because they lack talent, ambition, or capability but because they’ve adapted for too long to roles, cultures, and expectations that no longer fit. And adaptation is powerful… until it becomes self-abandonment. I see it every day with executives and professionals navigating career transitions: • Staying in roles that drain them because it feels “safer” • Confusing success with fulfillment • Waiting for burnout, layoffs, or frustration to force change • Forgetting they still have power in designing what’s next Thriving doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with intentional choices: ✔️ Clarifying what matters now ✔️ Defining success on your terms ✔️ Aligning your work with your values, strengths, and energy ✔️ Having the courage to pivot before life makes the decision for you Career transitions are not just about finding another job. They’re about reclaiming direction. You don’t have to settle for surviving your career. What’s one choice you’ve made or need to make to move from surviving to thriving? #CareerTransition #ExecutiveCoaching #CareerGrowth #CareerCoach #ProfessionalDevelopment #CareerPivot

Final call! See you all at Pune!

We are struggling as professionals to figure out how to showcase our talent without feeling sleazy. We're taught to self-advocate but we don't know how, and it doesn't land well when we try. As spring conference season wraps up, I'm noticing this is a common challenge from every workshop, speech, and 1:1 conversation I've had. I've developed some really great strategies for those who are comfortable doing great work behind the scenes, so that they can get the influence and opportunity they've earned. (Without feeling sleazy. 😄) I teach this two ways - to corporate professionals and to entrepreneurs. On May 29 I have a small group workshop specifically for women entrepreneurs. It's in person, and there are only 3 spots left. Grab one before they're gone! Details here: https://lnkd.in/gGHQmi3s

LinkedInMarketing Strategy

There are a lot of entrepreneurs right now building a business to escape corporate culture. And... they're bringing the corporate rules with them. On a call recently, a smart, capable woman told me promoting herself feels sleazy. Decades of conditioning that said it's "we" not "I." That good team players don't stand out. That showcasing yourself is selfish. Do you relate? Did you leave the corporation but the corporation didn't leave you? This isn't fixed with the right marketing strategy, perfect website, or a brand refresh. It's not a tactical fix - it's a mental one. This is the work we're doing in a small group session on May 29th. Uncovering what your unique value set is, learning how to build language around it in a way that isn't "sleazy" and learning how to connect it to the network you're building. If you left the corporation but the corporation didn't leave you, there are just a few spots left: https://lnkd.in/gGHQmi3s

You spent a long time preparing to attend events and conferences. You carefully selected your outfit. Practiced your introduction. Showed up and met great people. And then you drove home, set the business cards on your desk, and hoped you'd run into them again. Or, now that you're connected, you assume they'll just see you online. That's where visibility dies. Here's what actually moves the needle: knowing exactly what you bring to the table, being able to say it in a way that lands, and having a system to stay visible after the room clears. On May 29 I'm running a small-group Visibility Intensive in Vadnais Heights, built specifically for women entrepreneurs. We identify your unique value, work on your networking language until it sounds like you, and build a LinkedIn follow-up strategy that turns new and existing connections into real relationships and opportunities. 4 spots left. Details and registration are here: https://lnkd.in/gGHQmi3s

Remote work is getting a bad rap these days. I get it, there’s something about being in the same room and the same airspace with our fellow humans that you just can’t replicate virtually, via text or email. But… There is something to be said about being able to work from home, or on the road, or from wherever you happen to be. I know there will be lots of people saying “that’s great Barry, but how do we know you’re actually working when you’re calling in from an Airbnb in northwestern Wales?” You don’t. But it’s about trust. And more importantly, what do you say we toss in that little thing called “productivity”. Isn’t that one of the key elements that people want out of their teams? Sure, not everyone is productive when they are left alone to their own devices. But can’t that be measured? We need x and y done, and the evidence will tell us whether or not it has been. Look, I’m not saying that remote work makes sense all the time. There are also roles that just don’t work virtually. You can’t install a kitchen cabinet from a computer screen in another part of the country. However, you can sure design that cabinet’s install and specs from just about anywhere. I have a friend who is a lead plumber for large construction projects. His life changed, and his efficacy dramatically improved, when he was able to work a couple of days a week from home, doing his admin and design. Needless to say now on those days he is working remotely the stress of his commute is nil and he is able to catch up on the hundreds of calls with partners, vendors and suppliers (that are a key part of his job). Can’t we let this one go. Or is control still the aim of the game? I absolutely love my one-on-one in-person coaching sessions. And look forward to getting together in the flesh with my friends and colleagues. Yet that isn’t all the work. Sometimes it only makes sense to work remotely. 📸 Photo credit: Yours truly on a morning walk (at about 2am PDT by the way) up though Lôn Las Ogwen, an old rail line that has been converted to a walking/cycling greenway. Back home my work was sleep. After several hours of walking, I checked into my Airbnb, opened my laptop and started working at 5pm UK time (9am back home). That’s how I got this photo inside one of the many former rail tunnels on my way to Bethesda, Wales and still managed to get a few hours of work in.

Last night, I received a call that stayed with me long after the conversation ended. Mukti, who works with us, had gone back to her village in Murshidabad two months ago. Her 18-year-old daughter had just delivered her first child. Mukti herself was married at 14—a reminder of how early life responsibilities begin for many women in rural India. And yet, what struck me was not the weight of that reality… but the light she continues to carry within it. She didn’t call for help. She didn’t call with a concern. She called to ask, “Madam, have you had dinner? Is everything alright at home? How is Aditya?” And then, with a certain warmth, she said: “Madam, I have bought some nighties for you… in our village we get very beautiful cotton ones, with small prints—the kind you like. I hope you will wear them in this hot season.” She had also brought fresh turmeric from her village farm—“very high quality,” she said, with quiet pride. Here is a woman whose family works hard in the city, earning modestly, with little room for savings. Life is not easy. And yet, in the midst of her own responsibilities, she chose to think of someone else. Not out of duty—but out of care. In that moment, I saw something far deeper than generosity. I saw the changing face of rural India. A woman who: Began life early, yet continues to evolve with strength Moves between village and city with ease Notices, remembers, and expresses through thoughtful gestures Adapts—“women in our village now prefer nighties over sarees at night” Values her voice enough to return home to vote Holds on to dignity, warmth, and self-respect through it all This is not a story of limitation. This is a story of quiet expansion. Rural women like Mukti are not just navigating change—they are shaping it in their own understated ways. They are resilient without hardening. They are giving without calculation. They are aware without losing their rootedness. In a world that often measures progress in numbers, they remind us of a more human metric: The ability to care, to adapt, and to continue giving—even when life has asked much of you. Sometimes, the most powerful lessons in leadership and humanity don’t come from institutions. They come from voices like Mukti’s—simple, steady, and deeply profound.
