I was in the middle of delivering a session to one of our Management Trainees when his phone rang. He hesitated for a moment, then looked at me and asked, “May I take this?” I smiled and said, “Of course.” He answered the call, and since the phone wasn’t on mute, his father’s voice filled the room. “Papa… haan ji, bolo.” There was a brief pause. And then his father said something beautifully simple: “Beta, tere se baat karne ka mann kara tha… isliye call kar li.” No urgency. No issue to resolve. No hidden agenda. Just a desire to hear his son’s voice. In that moment, the session I was conducting seemed far less important. I found myself reflecting on how rare such calls have become in our lives. We live in a world where almost every conversation is scheduled, purposeful, and driven by outcomes. We call when we need something, when there’s a task to complete, or when something goes wrong. But how often do we reach out purely out of affection? Just to say, “I was thinking of you.” That brief exchange was a quiet but powerful reminder: Not all meaningful conversations need a reason. Sometimes, presence itself is the purpose. In the middle of our busy days, it’s worth remembering that the simplest gestures often carry the deepest impact. Maybe today is a good day to pause… and make that call.
