WE ARE BETTER THAN OUR BOSSES, BECAUSE THEY MADE US BETTER- A tribute to every reporting boss I had in the last 15 years... and to the ones I will have in the future… I am not saying I have become better than my bosses. I'm saying my bosses made me better than I was yesterday. And that's exactly what happened to them too. They became better than their bosses. That's how hospitality evolves. I have spent the last 15 years working under / with leaders at Hyatt, Lemon Tree Hotels & now Sayaji Hotels Ltd, across 9 cities- actually 9 states of BHARAT. Some were—and continue to be—exceptional mentors. Even today, they never hesitate to guide me whenever I seek their advice. Some were demanding. Some rarely praised. Some believed in throwing me into the deep end. Some taught through appreciation. Others taught through brutal feedback. At that point of time (not very long ago)- I often wondered, "Why is he making me do this?" Years later, while handling the same situations myself, I realised... "Now I know why." Looking back, I don't remember learning the biggest lessons in any classroom. Most of them happened while the hotel was running at full speed. They are learnt... >>> when I was scared to take my 1st check-in, even after days of practice during pre-opening. My supervisors (Tanzir Akhtar & Kanak Jennifer Melckior) simply walked away from the desk the moment they spotted a guest entering the lobby. The nervousness, the sweat, and the laughter after successfully completing my first check-in remain among my most memorable moments. >>> when 5 associates (Abhishek Bhattacharjee, Rahul Mohan, Varun Joseph, #manikdhar & me) who were fresher, competed every single day—not just to be good, but to become the best among ourselves. >>> during a night shift, when there was an international flight’s layover & I voluntarily stayed back till noon with my favourite Duty Manager Santanu Mukherjee— not because I had to, but because I loved the excitement. >>> when I happily extended my shift just to spend a little more time serving our favourite repeat guests. >>> during an over-booked situation when the city was sold out. >>> during a VIP arrival when everything went wrong. >>> when I was about to close my night shift & a medical emergency changed everything. Had to bring the guest down from 9th floor in stretcher via staircase with the help of other 3 colleagues. >>> after I closed my noon shift to return home at 2300 hrs & there was a fire incident. Put my uniform back to report to shift, to assist my fellow duty manager Sirus Braganza (who was new in system) and command the situation (until seniors took over). >>> during an unfortunate morning, a guest dislocated her shoulder & family was scared to touch her. Stayed beside her, reassuring both, her and her family while she cried in unbearable pain, until the ambulance arrived. >>> through countless other moments that words may never fully capture. PART 2 will continue with real university of hospitality…
