Startup people are acting like the sky is falling because of the CGT changes. The reality is that a slight change in how CGT is treated won't have a huge impact on startups in Australia. In Australia, if you exit your startup with $10M, you take home about $7.7M under the existing 50% CGT discount. With the new changes, you would take home $5.4M in the worst case scenario. That ignores all the other ways to make money (salary, distributions) which you will likely take before sale. If losing that additional $2.3M will stop you from trying to make money in Australia, why haven't you flown to NZ to do your startup there, where CGT is 0%? You could make another $2.3M! The reality is, taxation does not matter that much. If you made $10M, it's likely you could hold out for a little more. Most stories I hear about founders cashing out has little to do with having reached their maximum potential in the market. Mostly they believe that they have earnt enough and their heart is no longer in the business. If you have the drive to squeeze that extra couple of million out, you will.

Apr 2026Great to spend time in the warehouse today at Dina Uniform Group , our uniform supplier across our Westfield portfolio, and see firsthand the incredible work that goes into their operation. Connecting with our contract partners in their environment is so valuable - it gives real insight into their world and the level of detail behind what they deliver. From embroidery to screen printing and the scale of automation across the warehouse, was truly impressive. It also brought back memories of four years ago, when we spent time at Westfield Miranda photographing and testing pieces with our teams - a great reminder of how far the partnership has come. Thank you Gloria Kandalaft and Selma Osse 👔
