May 2026There's a fascinating contrast between how France, Denmark, and Italy responded to the 1970s oil crisis, which shaped their futures, and which is relevant for what happens next today ✳️ 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: responded fast with the Messmer Plan, rolling out nuclear at scale. Fastest large‑scale nuclear build in modern history, locking in low‑carbon, domestic power for decades. ✳️ 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤: backed energy independence and innovation. North Sea oil and gas made it self‑sufficient by the early 1990s, while early support for wind helped create a globally important industry. ✳️ 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲 (and much of Europe): chose diversification over independence, shifting from oil to imported gas, increasingly from Russia. That dependence only became fully apparent in 2022, forcing a scramble to replace Russian gas with alternatives like US LNG. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 ✳️not everyone will respond the same. Some countries may lean more on fossil fuels, others on renewables. Domestic supply and politics matter. ✳️swings in fossil fuel prices can catalyse long-term energy transitions ✳️energy security is a national priority, governments are pivoting away from imports towards domestic supply ✳️in the near term this could mean more fossil fuel stockpiling (there was a temporary rise in coal use following Russia/Ukraine) ✳️in the medium/longer term, renewables are likely to benefit ✳️there will be lots of investment opportunities thrown up by these shifts, across both renewables and traditional energy companies, and related supply chains, in both public and private markets Let me know what you think and/or if the investment opportunities are something you'd like to hear more about ——————————————— * Not investment advice. Apr 2026Another day, another depressing article on Brits' aversion to investing. In reality, it is cash that the riskier place to have your money in the long run. A huge expectations-reality gap is holding us back because we talk about risk in the wrong way 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Respondents to a Barclays survey (reported by the Times) thought there was a 23% chance that £100 invested in global firms would be 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 after 5yrs. Not just fall in value, be worth zero. 41% of non-investors said the risk of losing money was the main reason they'd held back 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Yes stocks go up and down lots in the short run but the longer you hold them, the lower the risk of an unfortunate outcome. There hasn't been a single 20yr period where US stocks have failed to beat inflation Cash might feel safe, and a rainy day cash fund should be a first priority, but it has a dreadful track record of beating inflation in the long run 𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞: A myopic focus on the risk of any short-term fall in value fails to emphasise the real risk that matters most to the people we’re supposed to be serving: the risk that they will be unable to achieve their financial goals. Beating inflation should be a minimum requirement Maybe regulators should insist that a disclaimer pops up whenever someone puts money in a cash ISA: the value of cash savings has not kept pace with inflation in the past, may not keep pace with inflation in the future, and may mean you are unable to achieve your financial goals... ——————————————— * Not investment advice. Apr 2026The UK is the share buyback capital of the world. Nearly 60% of UK large cap companies bought back their shares in bulk in the last 12 months vs around 45% in the US Japan and Europe also on a multi year uptrend Pre-covid, the US was exceptional on this front. No more. Analysis based on updated numbers to 31 March 2026, source: Schroders Equity Lens, April 2026 ——————————————— * Not investment advice.
