Congratulations to Tunisia, as the World Health Organisation has just validated the country’s elimination of trachoma as a public health problem! Four countries have reached this milestone so far during 2026, and there is growing momentum around beating this painful and potentially blinding disease worldwide. The #TropicalData team is proud to have supported Tunisia’s efforts to overcome trachoma. We provided technical expertise to help the country's health ministry complete six surveys, confirming the disease had been eliminated. We’re committed to supporting more countries to achieve the same result, so we can move closer to a world free from trachoma. Today is Earth Day. This year's theme is “Our Power, Our Planet” a reminder to move beyond awareness, towards more community-driven, practical environmental actions. Across the world, it is estimated that 1.3 billion people live with disabilities. When extreme weather events happen people with disabilities often face the hardest impacts because of systems and structures that are not inclusive. I am inspired by this project where Sightsavers worked with women with disabilities. “Hear Me, See Me” is a unique photography training project for women with disabilities in Nairobi where participants gained technical skills and created photo stories to highlight climate-related challenges and influence policymakers in Kenya. Six adorable kids who grew into real‑life superheroes - now working on some of Sightsavers most complex and impactful funding, including: - The Vision Initiative, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies’, boosting eye health services and helping address the global vision crisis. - Women’s Integrated Sexual Health programme, funded by the FCDO — ensuring services are disability‑inclusive, rights‑based and sustainable, even in fragile and humanitarian settings. - DID: Inclusive Futures, FCDO’s flagship disability programme that has transformed the lives of 3.4m people with disabilities and reached more than 15.6m others through our work. - Protecting disability rights with projects working across employment, health, education and citizenship, funded by the European Commission. - Ready for Inclusive Sustainable Employment and Entrepreneurship, an initiative funded by Standard Chartered Foundation to remove the barriers that young people with disabilities face in accessing decent employment. - Trachoma elimination programmes, supported by some of the most trusted names in philanthropy. - Research projects to strengthen the evidence behind what works to ensure Sightsavers’ programmes are robust, efficient and effective and to contribute to the global knowledge base. From superhero dreams to serious global impact - this team helps protect sight, fight disease, defend the rights of people with disabilities, and strengthen the evidence behind what works.
