𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝 "𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠?" We were 45 minutes into a demo with a Fortune 500 procurement team. We had just shown them how our system structured 2,000 contracts into economic data and flagged $1.8M in payment term inconsistencies nobody knew existed. The VP leaned forward and said, "This is impressive. But where is your redlining?" He was not asking a bad question. For 20 years, every contract tool he evaluated was measured on the same checklist: drafting, redlining, approvals, e-signature, repository. That was the category. We had built something in a completely different layer. A system that makes contracts computable, connects pricing terms to financial systems, and verifies whether negotiated value is actually being realized. But we made the mistake of answering inside the old frame. We talked about templates and workflows. We translated our value into someone else's vocabulary and lost the meaning every time. That prospect did not become a customer. And it forced the hardest conversation we have had as a founding team: are we even in this category? The answer was no. And the moment we stopped apologizing for what we were not and started defining what we are, the right buyers found us. P.S. If you are building something that does not fit the existing category, stop competing inside it. Define the new one.
