📈 👉 Agent Auth ( #AAuth ) is evolving! What started as an exploratory spec from Dick Hardt (who authored OAuth 2.0) is solidifying into a soon to be published IETF internet draft. #AAuth is a re-think of what auth should look like in a world of autonomous AI agents (also given best practices that have evolved from the OAuth world for the last 10+ years). In its current draft [1], the core authorization interaction between an agent and the auth server is asynchronous. That is, a request for an auth token to the /token endpoint may return an HTTP 202 with a location the agent should poll for updates. This allows for user consent and approval to happen in a few different ways: ▪️ Through a browser similar to what you see in auth-code grants ▪️ Through a backchannel ▪️ With clarifications: the user can ask the agent "please clarify what you're trying to do and why" And AAuth doesn't rely on the browser as a security vehicle and redirect URIs. And there are not client secrets. It can use interaction codes and/or simply poll (similar to device code flow in OAuth -- but it's core to the protocol, not an add on after-the-fact). The authorization server makes the decision whether authorization can be granted based on existing consent, or requires additional checks/humans in the loop. ✅ AAuth has the following notable design characteristics: - no bearer tokens!! - progressive auth (pseudonymous, identity only, identity+authz) - cryptographic agent identity - agent identity delegation - cryptographic resource challenges for auth - deferred/asynchronous auth grants - interaction/clarifications - cross service/identity domain token exchange - message signing 🔗 I have updated a very in depth set of examples and demos [2] that illustrate most of the AAuth capabilities. I've extended Keycloak [3] with an SPI you can drop in and use on any Keycloak as well as builds of agentgateway to support message/identity verification and policy enforcement [4]. More to come, including how this plays in the existing OIDC/OAuth world. I am also working on a writeup comparing this to all of the various extensions/profiles/RFCs, etc to OAuth. Stay tuned!!
