Twelve years ago I started attending the Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards as the media partner. As Apple now likes to remind me of pics in my camera roll, a photo popped up last week of Maverick and I at the 2022 awards. Fast forward to Saturday night and he walked in beside me again, except now he’s taller than me. That feels like it happened way too fast. In the past, during my short speech, I would proudly acknowledge my “special guest”. These days I get a reminder in the car on the way there “please don’t mum, that’s cringe”. Not exactly sure when that changed, but apparently we are here now. Each year I ask Mav join me as I want him to hear the stories of young Tasmanians already shaping this state and there is always a moment during the night where the room goes completely silent, where you can hear a pin drop and most of the crowd is trying not to cry. Saturday night was no different. As I said in my speech, what stands out most is that these young Tasmanians are not waiting for permission to make a difference. They are already doing it. And maybe that’s why I love this night so much. It’s not just about celebrating achievements, it’s about sharing stories and hope across generations.
