Cheap tokens are a trap. Everyone is racing to find the lowest cost per million tokens. But if you’re building for production, that's the wrong metric to track. The real advantage is getting more intelligence out of every token. I’ve seen teams optimize aggressively for token cost by replacing strong reasoning models with cheaper alternatives. The problem is, the hidden costs show up immediately: - Extra agent loops to fix basic logic errors. - Complex validation layers to catch hallucinations. - Latency spikes from constant retries. (and the developer hours spent debugging the "savings") If a model is 10x cheaper but more likely to hallucinate your database schema, the savings disappear fast. I saw this recently with a RAG implementation. Ngl, we almost pushed a "cost-optimized" version to prod before realizing the retrieval precision was garbage. Instead of throwing more tokens at the problem, we introduced an intent router. Simple tasks went to a smaller model. Complex reasoning went to the stronger one. Total cost dropped. System reliability actually went up. In practice, the biggest gains usually come from: - Smart reranking to reduce context noise. - Query rewriting so the model actually understands the task. - Knowing when to just use a hardcoded regex instead. - Choosing the right model for the specific sub-task. Stop tracking Cost per Token. Start tracking Cost per Correct Decision. #AIEngineering #MachineLearning #LLMOps #BackendDevelopment Ayush Singh
