May 2026Back in 2018, I was working on predicting which product category users would buy next, with a fancy name, propensity modeling. It was the core requirement for the personalization. I’ve experimented with lots of models and an XGBoost model won. Next, how to deploy it? We had to run a batch job daily and save the output to a table in DWH. My team lead at the time, Nezir Alp , told me that we just extract the parameters for regression and put them into the client. It’s much simpler than creating an API and easier to maintain for a small team. So a light bulb went off in my mind. Why don’t we do the same for XGBoost? I spent hours if not days on Stack Overflow and XGBoost docs (now i feel old), and discovered how to do the predictions in pure SQL. It reduced technical complexity and maintenance, but also inference time. This way a task that took 30 minutes dropped to 30 seconds since data doesn’t leave its natural environment (DWH), and we don’t have to pay for the network tax. I wrote about how you can do it. Link in the comments.
May 2026Confusion doesn’t always mean something is complex. Most of the time, it just means something isn’t clear. In work, unclear goals and vague instructions create unnecessary friction. It’s not about capability, it’s about structure. When processes are well-defined, decisions become easier, and progress accelerates. Clarity isn’t accidental. It’s built into the way we work. #Clarity #WorkCulture #Process #Productivity #Leadership #ContinuousImprovement #GrowthMindset
