May 2026Meet Biossil , a Toronto startup that is marrying AI and drug development in a new way. Instead of using AI to create molecules, it’s using LLM-based technology to pick through the discard pile of failed drugs that showed promising signs during development and passed safety and early efficacy trials. The hope is to zero in on the ones that merit a second life, with a little refocusing and fine tuning of what the medicines are trying to solve for, and put the drugs back on an accelerated development path to market. It’s the brainchild of former RBCx executive Anthony Mouchantaf and Dr. Alexander Mosa. Biossil isn’t trying to do the next weight loss drug but bring meds for serious, debilitating condtins like sickle cell disease to market. And it’s backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund , OpenAI , Janet Bannister ’s Staircase Ventures plus Golden Ventures and Panache Ventures and has partnered with more than 29 research institutions and hospitals including The Hospital for Sick Children , Harvard University , Mayo Clinic and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Boston Children's Hospital , which tells you its ambitions and progress have generated a lot of early excitement.
