Inspired and energized. Two words that sum up my experience serving as a judge for the Edward L. Kaplan, '71, New Venture Challenge at the The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and with the finals just weeks away on June 4th, I've been reflecting on what this program truly represents. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the NVC and an incredible legacy. From its founding in 1996, the program has helped launch companies that became household names...like Grubhub , Braintree / Venmo , Simple Mills and hundreds more that are quietly changing industries we interact with every day. That's not luck. That's the result of a rigorous, year-long process unlike anything else I've seen in university entrepreneurship. The numbers tell a part of the story: 88 teams applied this year. 27 were selected to advance through three rounds of judging...each session raising the bar, each one requiring founders to dig deeper, pitch sharper, and build stronger. What struck me most as a judge is the depth of investment that Booth faculty, business mentors, and coaches make in these students. This isn't a weekend pitch competition. It's a full launch program composed of three phases, a dedicated course, real mentorship, and real accountability. By the time these founders stand in front of a panel on June 4th, they've been shaped, challenged, and sharpened by some of the best venture capital, start-up and entrepreneurial minds in the country. And the talent? It gives me hope for the future of business. Watching the next generation wrestle with real problems ... and bring genuine solutions ... is one of the most rewarding things an executive leader can do. If you ever wonder whether the pipeline of bold, capable, values-driven leaders is intact, spend a few hours with NVC competitors. Your mind will expand and your hope will be reignited. Congratulations to the finalists earning their moment on that stage. And deep gratitude to Mark Tebbe , Steven Kaplan , Michael Alter and the faculty, the coaches, and the mentors who make this possible year after year. Every chance I have to engage with business school students my confidence in the future of business is reinforced. #NewVentureChallenge #ChicagoBooth #PolskyCenter #Entrepreneurship #NextGenLeaders #Leadership #venturecapital
