𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗜𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 According to the latest BPS Intercensal Survey (SUPAS 2025), the 𝗲𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝟭𝟭.𝟵𝟳%, surpassing the UN threshold that defines an aging society (10-percent threshold). On the other hand, 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 (𝗧𝗙𝗥) has continued to decline, with women giving birth to an average of just 𝟮.𝟭𝟯 children during their reproductive years between ages 14 and 49, while the infant mortality rate stood at 14.12. At the same time, Indonesia’s productive-age population has started to decline after peaking in 2020. This marks a major turning point for Indonesia’s long-term economic outlook. Indonesia’s challenge is no longer just demographic: ✔️ Fertility rates continue to fall toward replacement level ✔️ The dependency ratio is rising again ✔️ Around 60% of workers remain in the informal sector ✔️ Pension coverage is still extremely limited Indonesia still has a window to capitalize on its demographic dividend toward the 2045 Golden Indonesia vision, but that window is narrowing. The real question is no longer about population size, but whether the workforce can generate higher productivity, stronger tax capacity, and sustainable retirement security. Without labor reform, pension expansion, and productivity upgrades, aging could become one of Indonesia’s biggest economic and fiscal pressures over the next two decades.
