Apr 2026Last week marked a moment I have been waiting for since my five-year-old son, Sam, died in 2021. For the first time, NORSE and FIRES - the neurological conditions that took my son’s life - were raised in UK Parliament. To our knowledge, this is the first time they have been raised in any parliament anywhere in the world. This moment shows the power of families, community, clinicians, researchers, businesses and MPs coming together to drive change. Families across the UK living with the impact of these devastating conditions have finally been recognised. Many have endured unimaginable grief and trauma in silence for far too long. NORSE and FIRES are rare neurological emergencies that cause the sudden onset of relentless, hard-to-control seizures, often following a mild virus. In many cases, people can spend weeks or months in an induced coma, fighting for their lives as doctors fight to bring the seizures under control. For conditions with such catastrophic impact - predominantly affecting previously healthy children and young adults - that have no cure and so little understanding, it has taken far too long to reach this point. Why this matters: • The cause of NORSE and its subcategory FIRES remains poorly understood • There is currently no known cure • Around 1 in 5 people do not survive that acute stage • Survivors frequently face significant neurological disability More research is urgently needed. Greater awareness drives research - and research is what will ultimately improve outcomes. A huge thank you to the clinicians and researchers leading the UK’s fight to better understand these conditions and improve outcomes for patients and families. A heartfelt thank you to Samantha Niblett MP and her team for listening and making this happen - and to the Leader of the House for such a positive response. But this is only the beginning... Next stop: meeting Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. All driven by the love of one precious little boy...Sam ⭐ Sam’s Superheroes Foundation The UK’s only registered charity dedicated to NORSE & FIRES Research | Awareness | Family Support
