Working mums are one of the most dedicated and effective employees I know. There is no reason to make their lives more complicated than they already are. We want to get the work done as effectively as possible because our mum duty is always waiting for us. We simply don’t have time to dilly-dally. As leaders, we get to shape our team members’ experience around navigating the balance between work and parenthood. So, I made it one of my personal missions to make the working environment for my teams more mum-friendly. 👉 Every step of the way matters: 👶 The way we react to their pregnancy announcement Create an environment where women are not scared to share their big news. Be happy for them and plan the upcoming weeks of work together. And don’t follow my former manager, who replied to me: "Oh, so you’re leaving?”. He's my former manager for a reason now 😉 🤰 The way we treat them throughout pregnancy. They’re still professionals who want to work. So let them do their job at their own pace. Yes, I sometimes needed to take a nap in the middle of the day ( Margo Burkivska 's support was priceless then!) or work from home to avoid sitting in the office chair because of the back pain. But I still did the job. And trust me, I know first-hand that not involving a mum-to-be in strategic initiatives or leaving them out of the promotion list is not cool. Also, ffs, don’t lay them off. 🤱 The way we help them come back to work and settle down in a new reality Being a mum doesn’t mean we no longer have professional ambitions. At the same time, we need to constantly juggle two jobs - one with a little boss often requiring 24/7 care. Life is life. We don't magically stop being mums when we open our laptops. Do you need to start later/leave earlier because of the daycare run? Cool. Do you have to take a day off because your kid got sick? Please do. Does your toddler need to attend a call with you? I’ll be happy to meet them. No redundant, guilt-triggering comments or eye-rolling are needed. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. PS In the pic, you can see me in a meeting with my cute little assistant a few years ago. She was a regular guest in many of my meetings back then, and everybody I worked with knew her - cheers to the Agorapulse team (especially Sébastien Gendreau ) for being so understanding and supportive. Now she's 6, and she has 7 years of PMM experience (belly time included!) 😉
