It doesn’t cost a dime to be kind. A friend recently shared a story with me about his 95 year old Italian father-in-law. Everywhere he went, he treated people with warmth, respect, and kindness. Whether speaking to family, a waiter at a restaurant, or a stranger he had just met, he made people feel important. His favorite phrase was simple: “It doesn’t cost a dime to be kind.” At his funeral, his daughter placed a dime on every table. She asked each person to keep that dime somewhere special as a reminder of the incredible power of kindness and the impact one life can have on so many others. What a beautiful legacy. Long after titles, possessions, and accomplishments fade, people remember how we made them feel. In a world filled with stress, division, and distraction, kindness still matters. Sometimes the smallest gestures leave the greatest impact. Over the past several days, I had the privilege of conducting six leadership workshops at PIHRA 2026 focused on my program, The Authenticity Gap: Why Leaders Fail and How to Break the Cycle. The response from leaders and HR professionals throughout the conference was incredibly encouraging. What stood out most was the level of engagement and honesty during the discussions. Participants openly talked about the pressure leaders often feel to appear strong at all times, the fear of vulnerability, and the unintended disconnect this can create between leaders and their teams. It became clear that authenticity, trust, and emotional connection are topics leaders are deeply wrestling with in today’s workplace environment. Throughout the workshops, we explored the growing gap between how leaders perceive themselves and how they are actually experienced by employees. Using leadership research, neuroscience, emotional intelligence, and practical business examples, we discussed how authentic leadership directly impacts trust, engagement, communication, and organizational culture. Leaders were challenged to reflect on their own self awareness, transparency, and ability to create environments where employees feel heard, valued, and connected. Many participants shared that the sessions pushed them to think differently about leadership and gave them practical tools they could immediately apply within their organizations. My hope is that the impact of these workshops extends far beyond the conference itself and continues to influence leaders throughout California. Leadership shapes culture, morale, trust, and ultimately organizational performance. When leaders become more authentic, emotionally aware, and approachable, they create healthier workplaces where people are more engaged, collaborative, and committed. The goal of these sessions was not simply to teach leadership concepts, but to help leaders break destructive cycles that limit trust and connection and instead create cultures where people genuinely want to contribute, grow, and succeed together. Perception is reality in leadership. You may know your intent, your work ethic, and your commitment, but your team can only respond to what they experience. If a leader believes they are transparent but the team feels left in the dark, trust erodes. If a leader thinks they are decisive but the team experiences inconsistency, confidence drops. Leadership is not just about what you do, it is about how others interpret what you do. That gap between intent and perception is where culture is either strengthened or broken. The most effective leaders are not just self aware, they are perception aware. They actively seek feedback, they listen without defensiveness, and they adjust in real time. Why does this matter? Because perception drives trust, and trust drives performance. When your team perceives you as credible, consistent, and genuinely invested in them, engagement rises and results follow. If you want to elevate your leadership, stop asking “What did I mean?” and start asking “How was I experienced?” https://lnkd.in/gskNGExp UniGroup #Leadership #EmotionalIntelligence #Trust #LeadershipDevelopment #SelfAwareness #OrganizationalCulture #ExecutiveLeadership #Influence #LeadershipMatters
