Playwright tip: stop fighting popups in UI Flaky tests often come from ads, consent banners, and third-party overlays. > They appear randomly. > They block clicks. > They break tests. A common approach is to handle them in UI: Detect -> Check -> Close. Seems logical. But it doesn’t scale. Why it fails: • popups can be inside iframes • they appear unpredictably • selectors are unstable • logic gets duplicated across tests Result: complex and still flaky tests. The real problem is not the popup. It’s the uncontrolled environment. Better approach: Remove the source of noise. > No ads. > No overlays. > No randomness. Key idea: Don’t fix symptoms in UI. Control the environment.
Apr 2026Playwright tip: stop waiting blindly - use expect.poll () Some waits don’t fit into standard UI assertions. Not everything is: • visible • clickable • present in DOM Sometimes you need to wait for: • backend job completion • async state change • external system update And this is where many tests become flaky. Why it works: • retries automatically • stops as soon as condition is met • faster + more stable When to use expect.poll () • async backend processing • status endpoints (pending -> done) • queues, jobs, payments • anything outside UI lifecycle Risks: • unnecessary load on the backend • rate limiting • unrealistic user behavior
