The Hidden Cost of Poor Compliance in Pharma: What Audits Don’t Tell You Most pharma companies think they fail audits because of “gaps”. In reality, audit fail because of things audits don’t even measure. Let me explain. Before and during inspections, we focus largely on: - SOPs, records, protocols, reports, and documentation - SOP compliance - Investigations, CAPAs, and closures - Training records No doubt, all of these are important and critical to GMP, quality and audits. But the real issues often remain under the surface: a. We treat OOS, incidents, and deviations as a burden but not as opportunities to improve and move to the next level of excellence. b. Investigations are done to close, not to learn c. Root causes are not deeply understood, so problems surface again in similar or different way. d. Recurring deviations slowly become acceptable and normal way of working. e. Training is completed, but behaviour does not change f. Procedures are followed on autopilot mode without understanding them. g. Finally, many of us feel like working for regulators not servicing the customer with customer delight in mind Because of above, some important impacts don’t get enough attention: a. Delayed batches and supply issues b. Process variances c. Loss of trust with customers and patients d. Reduced credibility with regulators e. Rework and inefficiencies f. Increased environmental and sustainability burden due to reprocessing or rejection g. And most importantly, missed opportunities to improve In my experience, and I am sure all of us will agree?, “compliance is not about passing an audit or checking some tick boxes” but…. "It’s about building a system where people understand why they do something, not just what to do" When people understand the intent, performance and compliance both improves naturally. "That’s where true quality culture begins". In the coming posts, I will share practical insights on: “What audits miss, why issues repeat, and how we can move from reactive compliance to proactive quality. If you’ve seen similar challenges, I’d really like to hear your thoughts. These reflections are from experiences gained, and are not directed at any specific organization. #Pharma #Quality #Compliance #Audit #ContinuousImprovement #Leadership #leansixsigma #TQM
