Yesterday, we had very interesting discussion on our PATHS2050 insights. Thank you all for your energetic contributions! Curious about our outcomes? Check on PATHS2050 website.
May 2026Digitalisation is no longer optional for Europe’s water resilience. That was the main message which resonated loudly throughout #WaterMarketEurope 2026 in Brussels last week. During the event on Digital Twins, Data Governance & AI, stakeholders from across the ecosystem explored how digital technologies can accelerate the transition towards more resilient and future-proof water systems. 📈💧 In that context, it was great to see our colleague Louis Oosterlynck contribute with a pitch that touched on a crucial point: digital twins are not just about technology since they depend fundamentally on the quality, availability and interoperability of data, and even more importantly on a clear understanding of the problem they are meant to solve. 🔎💧 That perspective strongly aligns with how we approach water challenges at VITO . Through our work on digital water & soil, we focus on turning complex environmental data into actionable insights by combining models, remote sensing, in situ measurements, and AI into integrated decision-support systems. 🥅⚽ Whether it’s flood risk, water quality, drought resilience or soil-water interactions, the goal is always the same: enabling better, faster and more informed decisions. Events like #WaterMarketEurope confirm that the sector is moving beyond isolated tools towards connected, data-driven systems in which digital twins can truly support governance, investment decisions, and operational management. At VITO we are committed to helping shape that transition together with partners across Europe. Apr 2026The assumption you 'need both' is another example of conference driven development. Build your software and infrastructure for your user base, team size, and the problem at hand. Don't dive off the complexity cliff like lemmings without a very good reason, and enough resources to support it. A simple backend that's mostly CRUD, with a few hot paths, used by a few hundred or even thousand local customers, maintained by a team of 5, does not need to incur this kind of complexity. At that scale, orchestration is not the challenge you should be looking at. Before drawing the conclusion “we need k8s”, Postgres connection limits, slow queries and missing indexes, too-small instance size, caching strategies, inefficient handlers and lack of background job separation have all been part of the menu and been dealt with long before you feel like you have to take the dive. Don't do it on day 1.
Apr 2026A modular monolith is probably the best default for 90% of systems out there, and it's crazy this still needs to be reiterated. Doesn't mean you can't break out hot paths in your system to separate services later. But you get your logical boundaries in place FIRST. Then think about taking on the technical complexity of distributed computing when the scale you face requires it. You...are...not... Netflix...
Apr 2026ERA5-Land daily values Zarr v3 dataset: https://lnkd.in/eHErRwzx #ECMWF #ERA5 datasets in #Zarr format are bringing fresh capabilities for using daily aggregated values and fetching parameters values for specific spatial & time range. As I was exploring the dataset I phased a challenge on visualizing the continuous values with the typical approach of loading the dataset in #QGIS -this will become available for Zarr v3 probably soon after #GDAL 3.13 get released around May. Looking for alternatives, I've found #hvplot and with a bit of fine-tuning I got a local server running and rendering a yearly Zarr store, quite surprised by the speed response of the tooling so shout out to them. Do you see also #Zarr & #GeoZarr coming in the near future..? How do you visualize continuous datasets? Thanks to all the amazing Open-Source contributors and the effort around the EO ecosystem, we are anticipating great things to come 🛰️ 🌍 #VITO #VITO_EI
