Welcome to our PDW at R&D Management Conference this June in #Manchester where we show good and bad examples of AI/LLM use in scientific works.

European car manufacturers are giving away the most critical asset in their supply chain. Battery recycling plants are operating at a fraction of their battery capacity, because the feedstock is still driving on the road. But the European battery ecosystem is making a fatal assumption about the 2030s. Recyclers, gigafactories and OEMs expect these millions of aging batteries to automatically return to the formal supply chain. They will not. The moment an EV is sold, the OEM loses direct access to the pack. The buyer becomes the legal owner of the battery. The ultimate fate of the materials will be dictated by consumer behavior. ❌ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗸 Once a vehicle is out of warranty, these batteries migrate to independent workshops. Third-party mechanics lack formal links to OEMs or major recyclers, yet they are the actual gatekeepers of the urban mine. Instead of flowing systematically to dedicated recyclers, the feedstock will leak into informal secondary channels and export markets, starving the system. ✅ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁 Battery recycling infrastructure requires massive investments. That capital expenditure becomes a stranded asset for recycling companies if throughput is not guaranteed. To secure the supply chain, OEMs must transition to battery leasing models where they retain legal ownership of the pack from day one. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: Transitioning to an OEM-owned leasing model triggers two immediate market shifts: ⚡ The Guaranteed Loop: OEMs dictate the end-of-life destination, ensuring batteries are returned systematically under controlled conditions. ⚡ CAPEX Protection: Guaranteed material throughput validates the massive infrastructure investments required for hydrometallurgical hubs. You cannot build a circular economy with an asset you do not own.

It is extremely difficult to reduce our transport emissions. It was therefore very interesting to attend, representing VTT , the PATH2ZERO project mid-term meeting, hosted in Milan by our colleagues at TRT TRASPORTI E TERRITORIO SRL , who have developed a dynamic system model to evaluate our current policy pathways, and the alternative pathways we are developing in the work package that my colleague Elina Aittoniemi leads. Personally, it was very rewarding to meet bright and like-minded researchers, e.g., OUASSIM MANOUT , Francesco Chirico , Rosa Picón García -and a delight to have a moment to walk through Pinacoteca di Brera and see the quattrocento masterpieces.

VTT has won European Defence Fund 2025 call funding for three projects: DIALOG‑AI, SHIMBAD and SPIDER2. Their total budget is approx. EUR 100M and they focus on secure artificial intelligence, naval radar systems and satellite technologies for defence purposes. https://lnkd.in/dQFcAydQ

At first it was automation, then autonomous, and now we’re aiming at cognitive. Excited to join AI Summit Europe with my presentation on AI Driven Cognitive Readiness. In essence, it is about preparing hybrid human-machine-AI teams make the best possible decisions when the world as we know it, is getting faster, more complex, and unknown.

Frank kirjoittaa: "In the end, people need quite little for their well-being: enough food and water, a safe living environment, meaningful work and activities, and, above all, a community that cares about them and where they have close relationships. Sustainable well-being as a goal for politics would help to make both economic policy and climate policy forward-looking rather than defensive. The aim would be to build a society producing more well-being with less consumption. Instead of blind and wasteful consumption, we would focus on prioritizing that consumption, which actually increases well-being. ... The economy should never be the goal of politics. The well-being of citizens should. If politicians want citizens to follow their vision, they must dare to take the well-being of citizens seriously."

Diversifying food production through new technologies is essential for strengthening Europe’s food system resilience. I recently shared my views in this topic with Protein Production Technology International . 💡 The article is highlighting, for example, how innovations across alternative proteins and other emerging technologies can complement primary production and help build a more robust and future‑ready food system. One of the big challenges is integration - how to connect the new technologies for the benefit of the existing food system.
