April’s update on New Zealand consumer prices was a bit softer than expected. However, we’re yet to see the full impact of the Middle East conflict on costs of production here. Inflation is still set to push sharply higher over the next few months, adding to the pressure on interest rates. Check out our other research on the Westpac NZ Economics Team home page. May 2026I’ve had a great couple of days in Christchurch talking to businesses and visiting the new stadium. The vibe here is very different to other parts of the country. As we’re seeing in other regions, households and businesses in Canterbury are dealing with strong headwinds from high fuel prices and the broader rise in living costs, as well as the related uncertainty about economic conditions. However, the strength in commodity export prices (especially for dairy) is providing a sizeable boost incomes, spending and economic confidence. As a result, I expect Canterbury, along with Otago and Southland, will remain among the strongest parts of the economy as we navigate the current rocky global backdrop. Thanks to the team at Enterprise North Canterbury and all the businesses we spoke to. Also thanks to Mark Forward , Danny Mark and the rest of Westpac’s Canterbury team for all their work organising. Special thanks to Mark Inglis ONZM for sharing his Sherburys with me (after I’d already eaten two without asking!). May 20264th time supporting the Westpac New Zealand Chopper Bike Ride - and once again, I managed to stay off the bike and firmly on camera duty 😅 From towns to schools, it's always incredible to see the way communities show up for the riders. Last year, rescue helicopters across the lower South Island carried out nearly 2,300 missions - a pretty powerful reminder of why this all matters. It honestly makes me so happy seeing everyone out there riding and backing the communities that rely on this service. Proud to play a small part in helping make this happen 🚁 #TogetherGreater #ChopperBikeRide #ChopperBikeRide2026 Reuben Tucker , Sarah Hearn , James Beech , Phil Taylor , Mathew Snowden , Matthew Graham , Ben Piper , Simon Macdonald , Cat Feaunati , Tim Montgomery , Delano Conradie , Paddy Gower , Sarah Cowley Ross , Kim Ryland , Todd Johnstone , Brook Macdonald
