Building 0 to 1 inside an organization is one of the loneliest things I have done. Not lonely in a dramatic way. Lonely in a quiet, persistent way that is hard to explain to anyone around you. Everyone else has a scoreboard. Revenue. Retention. Efficiency. You are playing a different game, one where the scoreboard does not exist yet, and you are simultaneously trying to build it while justifying why it does not exist. The odds are not in your favor. You know that. You signed up for that. But knowing it intellectually and living it daily are very different things. You run learning loops. Hypothesis. Experiment. Validate or invalidate. Iterate. Repeat. There is no playbook. No prescription. Just conviction, and conviction is invisible to everyone except you. How do you score conviction? How do you even know if yours is the right kind? External founders have it hard. But they can pitch 20 VCs and need one yes. When you are building internally, your audience is one. One founding team. One set of priors. One relationship that carries all the weight. That is not just emotionally harder. It is structurally more fragile. And I will be honest. I can empathize with the organization too. How do they judge something they are not executing? They are operating on different information, different time horizons. They are not malicious. There is just a gap, and maybe part of the internal founder’s job is to close that gap. To translate ambiguity into something the org can receive. To make the learning visible, not just run it. But that translation work takes energy away from building. And you are already running on whatever is left after the uncertainty, the loneliness, and the quiet fear that priorities might shift before you get to find out if you were right. Failures are celebrated in books. In podcasts. In retrospect. Nobody talks about the middle, where there is no resolution yet, no clean narrative, no outcome to frame the struggle around. I am not writing this for acknowledgement. I am writing it because I suspect a few people will read this quietly and feel slightly less alone. That is enough for me. If you are building something from nothing, inside a company or outside one, I see you.
