🚨 URGENT: Microsoft Defender zero-days exploited in the wild. No patch available. If you are using Microsoft Defender: ASUME COMPROMISE. | 3 uncomfortable truths ▪️ Uncomfortable truth #1: Your last line of defense can become the attack vector. Multiple zero-days ( #RedSun , #UnDefend , after #BlueHammer ) are being actively exploited, with no patches available for some of them. One enables SYSTEM-level privilege escalation on fully updated systems by abusing Microsoft Defender itself. This breaks a core assumption in security: that endpoint protection reduces risk. In this case, it can be part of the exploit chain. As mentioned before, anything at the endpoint level can be bypassed or even weaponized. That is why a network-layer control plane becomes critical, not as a replacement, but as an independent layer of visibility and enforcement. When the endpoint is compromised, the network is often the only place left to detect abnormal behavior, contain lateral movement, and disrupt the attack before it scales. ▪️ Uncomfortable truth #2: When trust in disclosure breaks, cyber risk accelerates. These exploits were publicly released as a protest against the vendor’s disclosure process. Regardless of the full story, the signal is clear: when researchers lose trust, coordinated disclosure collapses. Zero-days go public faster, and defenders and attackers get access at the same time, but not with the same readiness. This is exactly why programs like TrendAI Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) exist: to provide a neutral, trusted path that protects researchers and stabilizes the ecosystem. Without that, disclosure becomes friction, and friction becomes risk. ▪️ Uncomfortable truth #3: In a world where every AI claims it finds more vulnerabilities than ever… the hardest ones still require humans. We are flooded with claims that AI is discovering vulnerabilities at unprecedented scale. And yes, that’s true, when analyzing source code with full visibility. But the vulnerabilities that matter in real attacks often live in binaries, in behavior, in race conditions, and in the interaction between complex system components. These are not pattern-matching problems, they are systems problems. And they are exactly the kind of vulnerabilities that don’t yield easily to automation. If we don’t understand this gap, we risk believing we are getting ahead… while attackers are still operating in places where AI has limited reach. These three realities are not isolated issues, they are signals of a broader shift in cyber risk and cybersecurity. Organizations that continue to rely on prevention, patching, and trust as primary controls will struggle. The advantage will belong to those who operationalize cyber risk, act proactively, and can operate effectively under uncertainty, assuming compromise by design rather than reacting to it after the fact.
