May 2026Yesterday evening, Cilantro , which is a famous coffee chain in Egypt, where I used to have my morning espresso, especially when I'm in Cairo, sent me this brilliant SMS (the last one) I caught it in my notifications center and read it immediately. First read: I thought someone on their team had a very bad night. Second read: I realized this was the most calculated message they've sent all month. Here's what Cilantro understood that most brands don't: Your audience has been conditioned to ignore you. Look at the message above it in the thread. I scrolled past all of the previous ones without blinking. We've been marinated in promotional SMS since 2012. Our brains filter it automatically now. So what do you do when your audience has built immunity to your messaging? You send something that doesn't look like messaging. A leaked internal note. A "mistake." Something that triggers the one instinct marketers can't buy: curiosity. I opened it. I screenshotted it. I'm writing about it now. That's three actions Cilantro's entire SMS history never got from me. Pattern interruption isn't new. But most brands are too scared of looking "unprofessional" to actually use it. Cilantro wasn't. What do you think? Did you get that SMS?
