If you're still on the fence here is what Katie Christer , Associate Software Engineer and CFG alumni, has to say about her experience on the programme! ✨ “What was your biggest ‘wait… I actually CAN do this’ moment during the CFG programme?” I had this feeling quite a few times during the CFG degree, especially when looking back at projects that felt so much more advanced than the “Hello World” we started with. At the same time, the following week’s classes usually humbled you pretty quickly once the technical difficulty ramped up again. The biggest shift for me was realising I’d stopped panicking when things went wrong. When an application wouldn’t run, tests were failing, or nothing seemed to work, I no longer immediately thought, “I can’t do this.” Instead, I started trusting that I could figure it out, debug the issue, and eventually fix it. That change in mindset was a huge confidence boost. ✨ “What’s something you’ve worked on at Zopa that made you stop and think: ‘I can’t believe I get paid to do this’?” Recently, I’ve been experimenting with AI models to help automate parts of the user onboarding process, which has been really exciting to work on. Having the time and space to experiment, explore ideas, and think about how something could actually be implemented at scale has made the work incredibly engaging. Hackathons have been especially fun too, because we almost always end up pushing ideas much further than where they originally started. One thing I’ve learned in engineering is that there’s always another improvement, feature, or idea to explore, which makes the work feel constantly creative and collaborative. ✨ “What’s one thing you thought you’d need to be ‘good at tech’ before joining CFG — and what turned out to matter way more at Zopa?” Before joining the CFG degree, I thought I needed to already be “good at coding” to keep up. I spent a lot of time cramming Codecademy sessions, watching YouTube tutorials, and panic-building portfolio projects before classes even started. It definitely helped a little, but it turned out not to be the thing that mattered most. What mattered far more was learning how to ask for help confidently. That can be surprisingly difficult at first because nobody wants to feel like they’re slowing others down or asking a “stupid” question, especially in a technical environment. Since joining Zopa though, my colleagues have been incredibly open and supportive of my endless stream of questions, and that culture of openness has massively accelerated my learning and confidence!
